Slaid Cleaves

Slaid Cleaves Also Never Wrote a Song About His Momma

Slaid Cleaves is often referred to as a “songwriter’s songwriter,” which is code for the fact that his voice isn’t exactly melodious. But for those country music fans who are seriously into lyrics, they are huge fans of this transplanted native of Maine. Living in Texas for a lot of years now, Cleaves has managed to absorb a true Texas spirit and pens songs that are perfect for his raspy, low, voice.

Baby in the back seat,
and another on the way,
Sherry thinks of Billy at
the end of every day,
Spends her nights waiting
for real life to start,
Listening to the sound
of her double crossed heart.

Broke down, cracked and shattered,
Left in pieces like it never even mattered,
There’s no turnin’ round,
It’s broke down.
