Holland’s Logo

It is a quiet place hidden away in an office block off North Travis Street in Sherman, so the amount of rowdy school spirit that comes out of the place is surprising. Daron Holland owns Hollands Logo; as a native and lifelong resident of Sherman he bleeds maroon and white.

Anna McKinney

“The day of the Christmas parade in 1995, I had gone to a doctor for a second opinion. I came right up here, straight from the doctor’s office. I had a parade to do. I did the parade and then met my husband at a Christmas party. I sat there beside him and told him I had to go to the hospital in two days.”

Risky Business

Some folks say that you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes. If true, Naif Risk’s shoes, sturdy, dependable and well maintained, declare him an amiable man with a can-do attitude. His father’s shoes would say the same, as would have his grandfather’s. All three generations of Risk men have shaped the success of one of Sherman’s oldest businesses with their skill and congeniality.

Super Foods

We’ve learned since grade school that our bodies have nutritional needs that we should try to meet every day: 2-4 servings of fruits, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 2-3 servings of dairy, etc. But what we may not have learned is that there are nutritional needs very specific to our genders. Men’s and women’s bodies are inherently different.

Flush with Success

“Most houses in Sherman, Denison, and Grayson County have something in them that came from here,” said Jesse Parrish, President of Johnson-Burks Supply. “It may be 20 cents worth, it may be 20 dollars worth, but virtually every house built here has something of ours in it.” From a simple pipe to an entire plumbing system, Johnson-Burks has for the past eight decades supplied plumbing supplies to Texoma.

Soap Star

During the day Wendy “Bo” Mueller, 46, is a sales assistant in the advertising department of CableOne Advertising in Sherman. At night and on weekends she becomes Texoma’s newest soap star—mixing up batches of exotic, all-natural, aromatic soaps in her rural Denison soap kitchen.

Joan Douglass

Joan Douglass once believed that wall-to-wall carpeting and a white telephone were evidence of a successful life. That was when she and her husband Bill were first married and had few assets other than their love for each other.

Falcon Boats

For Texoma striper anglers the “be all to end all” in custom boats is a Falcon. Jeff Gooden and Joe Simmons own the Falcon Boat Company that builds striper bass boats in Sherman, and the two present an interesting contrast of age and expertise. Each man brings something special to the business.

Garrett Patton: Cut & Run

Garrett Patton will tell you that he’s no better at styling hair than anyone else. He may not think he is but his clients do. Despite the disclaimer, he’s booked solid and often can’t even get away to grab lunch. The 33-year-old projects an air of easy confidence with clients who return year after year to benefit from his eye for style and his intense concentration.
