During my summer visits to Leonard, the dinner table would be bright with colors of the season, the reds of ripe tomatoes, beets, and strawberries, the yellows of corn on the cob and squash, and the greens of lima and green beans, English peas, lettuce, mustard greens, spinach and collards. I didn’t appreciate that the tomato on the table at lunch had been on the vine an hour before, and that the corn went from the stalk to the kettle in a matter of minutes.

Most traditional church buildings are based on a Colonial revival style, or the Gothic style. In the late 19th century, urban Protestant congregations built Romanesque churches—rambling, stone structures with large auditoriums to serve densely populated areas that drew their congregations from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic neighborhoods for accessible and participatory worship. The interior style of these churches was influenced by theater design. Excellent acoustics, good sight lines, comfortable seating, large stages and dramatic lighting began to appear.

Brown Gravy Sauce
The sign out front read PO Sam’s. His friends called him Po’ Sam, like the New Orleans sandwich called the po’ boy. Other folks called him just PO. As long as they went away happy after eating some barbecue with his legendary “spicy brown gravy” sauce, PO Sam was happy. And by that criterion, he was a happy man indeed.
