Ashburn’s Ice Cream Recipe

“We didn’t make homemade ice cream. We made Ashburn’s Ice Cream,” said Bill Ashburn in the July-August issue. Now you can make Ashburn’s Ice Cream too.

We had this recipe ready and waiting, but just ran out of room. So many people have shared their Ashburn’s memories that we decided to make room this time. Will that be one scoop or two?

Ashburn’s Original Vanilla Ice Cream

(Converted from a two-hundred gallon recipe by Lawrence Ashburn in August 2002.)

  • 3 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  • 49 ounces (3 ½ 14 ounce cans) sweetened condensed nonfat milk
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • ½ ounce plain gelatin dissolved in 1 cup warm water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Adams vanilla extract
  • 3 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1 drop red food coloring

Mix ingredients thoroughly, and then add enough water to make one gallon of mix.

Freeze according to freezer’s directions.

  1. OMG!!!! ASHBURNS, Lemon Custard Icecream was the greatest ever, I;ve tried others here in Georgia, but none of them stands up to ASHBURNS ICECREAM.

  2. I just read a comment which mentioned Hawaiian Delight. That comment reminded me of the flavor I loved. This is one flavor I wish I had the recipe.

  3. I lived in Sherman as a small girl between the ages of 4 and 10. My favorite Ashburn’s flavor was one that had a nice pale green color and had nuts and pineapple. I think it had bits of cherries and other ingredients I don’t remember but I sure wish I had the exact ingredients. Hopefully there are those out there that may have that flavors name and the recipe. It would be greatly appreciated.

  4. I lived in Denison from 1961 until 1973 with one break from 68-69. The first thing we looked for in Irving was Ashburn’s! Luckily there was a store not far away, in Plymouth Park Shopping Center I believe. But the Denison store is home to my ice cream crush. PLEASE tell me there was a Tutti Fruitti flavor way back in the early 60’s. Looked like vanilla with little flecks of red, green, etc… I scoured the Earth looking for that flavor and found it ONCE in a gellateria in Rome, right by Trevi Fountain. I switched to vanilla when I got a little older and know it was the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. THANK YOU ASHBURN FAMILY! PS- I worked for Keith Ashburn while going to college, he was a super great guy with a great wife and a young child, about 1983. They really helped my wife and I out with our newborn baby girl. The Ashburn’s have always been great to me. THANK YOU!!!

  5. Christmas flavor Choco rum ? Would love that recipe
Loved the Lemon and Hawaiian Delight as well..
The dark cherrie was great too !

  6. The best ice cream in my opinion was Fudge Ripple!!! My grandpa made a lot of ice cream in the sherman location. He use to play a trick on me and put me in the freezer and turn the lights off. My sister and I would start screaming and laughing. Great memories. I also loved the Santa Claus ice cream molds

  7. This is a frequent question. To our knowledge, not all recipes are available.

  8. Grew on Ashburn’s, and miss it dearly! My favorite then, and still to this day is/was their Lemon Custard! Can have that recipe published?

  10. The best ice cream in the world was Ashburn’s lemon custard. I last had it in 1965. Does ANYONE have the recipe? Have told my family about it all these years.

  11. I was eating ashburn”s ice cream when I was 5 years old in Sherman Texas 1945 lemon custard was my favorite and then Hawaiian delight the best ice cream in the world o boy wouldn’t I love to have the recipe for lemon custard I have the one for Hawaiian delight haven’t made it yet but I have it sure wish they were still around

  12. I loved going to the Ashburn’s off Granbury Rd in Wedgwood. We loved the lemon custard and the Hawaiian Delight best, but all flavors were great. I think the vanilla recipe is the BASE of all flavors. So, I may add to the vanilla and see what I come up with. In the late ’80’s there was an old DQ being used as a Chinese plCe that still served Ashburn’s ice cream but one day we went in & the owners told us of a spill at the Ashburns facility & that it was out of biz. 🙁

  13. Loved the cinnamon ice cream and no one else had raspberry sherbet! Plus Hawaiian pineapple and lemon custard. Adams vanilla I bet is the one Adams calls Adams Best vanilla!

  16. Bill Ashburn, who has an insurance business in Denison may have some of the recipes.

  17. In the mid-50’s, I rode my bike most every day after school to Ashburn’s on Camp Bowie (Ridglea) in Fort Worth. Ordered “Pecan Crunch.” It is still the best ice cream and the best flavor of ice cream I’ve ever eaten. So the question is, “Who has/owns the recipes to Ashburn’s ice creams today? Especially PECAN CRUNCH?!”
