Located on FM 678, between Whitesboro and Callisburg, Rancho Sereno: The Inn at Sandy Creek sits quietly along a winding road behind tall trees. Behind the eight foot Austin stone walls and gated entry, Mike and Lisa Mayberry have developed a spectacular place for rest and relaxation.
Rancho Sereno is located in the heart of horse country. The Mayberry’s originally purchased and carefully developed this 165-acre property for Lisa’s passion, showing reining horses.
Their son, Matt Mayberry, an architect from Graham, Texas, designed the one-of-a-kind horse barn, inn and cottages on the ranch. The horse barn for the ranch’s breeding operation features such creature comforts as roomy stalls with night lights, fans and showers. The contemporary design is inviting to humans and horses alike.
Just past the horse barn and pastures is the Inn at Sandy Creek, a bed and breakfast accommodation named for the water course that bisects the property. The Inn is nestled in a grove of trees across from one of three lakes located on the property. The inn features an elegant great room, which Lisa furnished with direction from famed designer Jeffrey Weisman. The great room opens into a large gourmet kitchen where breakfast is served each morning.
Guests can relax in front of the great room’s large stone fireplace or study the wildlife just outside the wall of windows opposite the kitchen. Just off the great room is a screened-in porch that is heated, allowing guests to use the area year round. Another place to read, relax or bird watch is a large deck on the south side of the great room that overlooks the private lake.
The Inn’s guest rooms, like everything else at Rancho Sereno, are welcoming and comfortable. Each room features a separate entrance for privacy, but is connected by an exterior gallery that joins the rooms to the Inn. Two large guest cottages are separate from the Inn and are connected to each other by an open deck. Each cottage features skylights for stargazing while lying in bed as well as its own private porch.
If you are looking for an oasis in your own back yard where you can watch the wild turkeys with your morning coffee or the deer at dusk, look no further than Rancho Sereno—where architecture, design elements and atmosphere are unparalleled. The only guest complaint is “it might be too quiet”.
The ranch is adjacent to a 115-acre wildlife preserve, crisscrossed by walking trails. When the weather is right, guests can use the well-equipped pavilion that features a full outdoor kitchen with refrigerator and ice machine. Just an hour’s drive from Dallas and minutes from Lake Texoma and WinStar Casino, the Inn offers a quiet location, but not far from entertainment.
